24-Year Old Kenyan Maryanne Oketch Crowned Survivor Season 42 Winner

24-year-old Kenyan Maryanne Oketch has been crowned the winner of Survivor Season 42. The Ontario-based Kenyan was declared the winner at the season finale that took place on 25th May 2022. This victory makes Maryanne the 2nd woman of color winner in the highly competitive show. It also makes Maryanne the first black woman to win in 20 years after Vecepia Towery won in 2002.

Prior to the winner’s announcement, Maryanne couldn’t hide her joy at making it to the finale. The 24-year-old wrote on her Instagram, “I am so blessed to not only be on a season of my favorite show but to be on every episode? It’s mind boggling!” She is currently a seminary student in in Ajax, Ontario.

Maryanne Oketch secured 7 out of the 8 jury votes after making it to the Survivor 42 finale alongside Lindsay Dolashewich, Romeo Escobar, Mike Turner, and Jonathan Young. She became the winner after defeating Michael “Mike” Turner and Romeo Escobar in a 7–1–0 vote. The 24-year-old is now the bearer of the prestigious Sole Survivor title and will receive the $1 Million prize money.

Survivor is a reality competition television franchise show in which contestants are left on a remote island. They are then required to fend for themselves while facing several challenges in order to win the grand prize money. Its season 42 premiered on March 9, 2022, on the popular TV channel CBS in the USA and globally in Canada.  The show has gained a cultic global audience since its launch in 2000.
